FAQs About Globe Valves
What is a globe valve and how does it work?
A globe valve regulates flow using a disc that moves perpendicular to the seat, allowing accurate throttling and tight shut-off.
Should I choose A105 or stainless steel?
Use A105/LF2 for high pressure systems and general service, and F316/F316L stainless steel where corrosion resistance is required.
Can globe valves be used for flow control?
Yes. Unlike gate valves, globe valves are suitable for throttling and precise flow adjustment.

FAQ
What Is Globe Valve?
The industrial globe valve is a sophisticated linear-motion valve primarily designed for stopping, starting, and regulating fluid flow. Unlike the simplistic gate valve, which operates on a binary isolation principle, the globe valve utilizes a disc (plug) that moves perpendicularly to the seat.

Forged Steel VS Cast Steel
Forged steel gate valves are manufactured by shaping solid metal billets under high pressure and heat. This process aligns the grain structure, eliminates internal voids, and results in superior mechanical strength, impact resistance, and fatigue endurance. In contrast, cast steel gate valves are formed by pouring molten metal into molds—a method that can introduce porosity, inclusions, or micro-cracks if not tightly controlled.
SFAN Valve’s forged steel gate valves—available in sizes from 1/4″ to 4″ (DN10–DN100)—are engineered with solid wedge designs and OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) stems for reliable shutoff and visual position indication.
While cast steel gate valves are cost-effective for large-diameter, —available in sizes from 2″ to 48″ (DN50–DN1200)-are engineered with Flexible or Solid wedge designs and OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) stems for reliable shutoff and visual position indication.

Globe Valve VS Gate Valve
If you’re deciding between a gate valve and a globe valve, you’re usually balancing three things: shutoff reliability, flow control needs, and system pressure loss.
A simple rule of thumb:
- Choose a gate valve when you need full open / full close isolation with minimal pressure drop.
- Choose a globe valve when you need repeatable throttling (flow regulation) and you can accept higher pressure drop.
Below is a criteria-by-criteria comparison aimed at procurement managers and plant/project engineers, with the practical caveats that tend to drive lifecycle cost.
More details in “Gate Valve vs. Globe Valve: How to Choose the Right One“.
Globe Valve VS Ball Valve
Globe valves and ball valves represent two fundamental design philosophies in industrial fluid control, each optimized for specific process requirements. Globe valves, governed by standards such as API 623, utilize a linear-motion plug to achieve high-precision throttling and flow regulation
