FAQ
What Is Gate Valve?
Industrial gate valves are the most widely used isolation valves in fluid control systems. Their core function is to achieve full opening or closing of pipeline media through the vertical movement of a gate along the flow axis. From the perspective of an SFAN engineer with 15 years of industry experience, a gate valve is not merely a mechanical component, but a complex integration of pressure boundaries, materials science, and sealing logic.

Forged Steel VS Cast Steel
Forged steel gate valves are manufactured by shaping solid metal billets under high pressure and heat. This process aligns the grain structure, eliminates internal voids, and results in superior mechanical strength, impact resistance, and fatigue endurance. In contrast, cast steel gate valves are formed by pouring molten metal into molds—a method that can introduce porosity, inclusions, or micro-cracks if not tightly controlled.
SFAN Valve’s forged steel gate valves—available in sizes from 1/4″ to 4″ (DN10–DN100)—are engineered with solid wedge designs and OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) stems for reliable shutoff and visual position indication.
While cast steel gate valves are cost-effective for large-diameter, —available in sizes from 2″ to 48″ (DN50–DN1200)-are engineered with Flexible or Solid wedge designs and OS&Y (Outside Screw and Yoke) stems for reliable shutoff and visual position indication.

Gate Valve VS Globe Valve
If you’re deciding between a gate valve and a globe valve, you’re usually balancing three things: shutoff reliability, flow control needs, and system pressure loss.
A simple rule of thumb:
- Choose a gate valve when you need full open / full close isolation with minimal pressure drop.
- Choose a globe valve when you need repeatable throttling (flow regulation) and you can accept higher pressure drop.
Below is a criteria-by-criteria comparison aimed at procurement managers and plant/project engineers, with the practical caveats that tend to drive lifecycle cost.
More details in “Gate Valve vs. Globe Valve: How to Choose the Right One“.
Gate Valve VS Ball Valve
The fundamental difference between gate and ball valves originates in their internal mechanisms for flow obstruction. A gate valve operates as a linear-motion device, where a flat or wedge-shaped closure element—the “gate”—moves perpendicular to the flow path. This design is often likened to a sliding door or a guillotine, where the gate is lifted or lowered by a threaded stem to clear or block the passage. In contrast, a ball valve utilizes a rotary-motion mechanism, employing a spherical disc with a bored center that rotates 90 degrees to align with or perpendicular to the pipeline.
